Hopeful fitness enthusiasts looking for a discount might go much worse than the Samsung Watch 5. The Galaxy Watch 5 was previously considered the series’ workhorse, and for good reason, it has all of the sensors you’d expect, including heart rate monitoring, temperature, and blood oxygen.

The same is true for comprehensive sleep coaching, with every snore and night disruption logged in Samsung’s health apps and shown on a variety of graphs and wellness charts. Samsung is also continuing to maintain the Watch 5 with software updates, including interaction with Samsung and Android devices, thanks to Wear OS 4’s expanded breadth.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 does not break new ground in the realm of smartwatches, but it is the greatest Android watch available right now. It boasts a larger battery than previous year’s models, a more durable build, and a new temperature sensor.
The Galaxy Watch 5 does not appear much different than last year’s standard Watch 4. However, the underside of the watch is now more snug against your wrist, providing a more comfortable fit. It is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, as was the case last year.
The Galaxy Watch 5 has a software based touch bezel that allows you to navigate by moving your finger along the display’s edge. It rests on top of the touchscreen, and there are two physical buttons on the watch’s side. The Galaxy Watch 5 has the same CPU as last year’s models.

The Watch 5 shares many of the same specifications with the Watch 4, including the Exynos W920 CPU, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, contactless payments, GPS, optional LTE, contactless payments, and 5ATM water resistance. You receive the same health features with the slightly upgraded 3-in-1 BioActive sensor, heart rate tracking, ECGs, and body composition analysis. The only new hardware you’ll get is an infrared temperature sensor.
The 40mm and 44mm watches are slightly heavier (roughly the weight of a penny) due to larger batteries. It has a curvier back to provide better skin contact and higher precision.
To be clear, the Watch 5 is still superior if you’re using a Samsung phone. For instance, the ECG function is only compatible with Samsung phones, and replicating all of Samsung Health’s wellness and fitness features would require a half-dozen third-party apps.
Samsung also improved the typing experience on small screens by adding new keyboard inputs.
You can now use dictation, handwriting, and swipe-to-type features. Your mileage may vary. I found dictation and handwriting handy, but swiping to text on a 40mm screen is simply not ideal, no matter how you slice it.
