Sony’s 1000XM5 has a redesigned design that folds up less compactly than previous models. I found these to be rather comfortable for extended periods of time, with just enough clamping force to keep them from moving around on your head when you gaze down at your keyboard. These, however, are not suited for working out or jogging. Really, no over-the-ear headphones exist.

The first thing you’ll notice about the XM5 is its updated design, which includes significant improvements to the headband design. The previous versions’ two hinges have been replaced with a single hinge with a swivel and rocker. That means they fold flat but do not fold up. They also come with a new carrying bag, which appears to be around 20% larger than the previous model.
That’s disappointing, but the XM5 weighs four grams less than the XM4, coming in at a pretty light 250 grams. They are also more comfy to wear. They fit tightly around my head but don’t seem too tight.
They also have new synthetic leather ear pads, which appear to be more robust than the ones on the XM4. I might be mistaken, but I believed they breathed better. However, as with other over-ear headphones, wearing these in hot weather can cause your ears to steam up.
These headphones feature a distinct audio character. That particular sound profile is well suited for background listening. For example, if you work in an open-plan office and want to listen to music while working on spreadsheets, writing, producing code, or doing anything else, you don’t necessarily want the most exciting or dynamic sounds. You want something smooth and not distracting.
In certain conditions, the 1000XM5 could be an excellent option.
They have a fairly good top-to-bottom frequency response, which I believe is why they have received so many awards, but that frequency response is quite inconsistent as we move from 20 to 20 kHz. There are many ups and downs along the route, resulting in a distinct, slightly veiled, and sometimes inaccurate sound character, if you really want to be picky about it.
If you’re using a PC, the integrated microphone outperforms its predecessor. The microphone can easily distinguish speech from moderate background noise, so if you’re taking a call from a noisy office, your voice rises above the noise, making speech stand out.
These headphones have outstanding battery life. The maker advertises that they will last 30 hours continuously with their ANC on, as did their predecessor. On the plus side, you can set an auto-off timer in the app and use ‘Smart-Pause’, which instantly pauses your audio when you pull the headphones off your head.
